| Term | Definition |
| A | |
| Appletalk | A series of protocols developed by apple computer company. Used to allow communication between apple computers. |
| ARP | Address Resolution Protocol used to map ip addresses to MAC addresses. |
| Assynchronous | Access of information in a undetermined time. |
| ATM | Assynchronous Transfer Mode |
| B | |
| BER | Bit Error Rate |
| Bandwidth | The difference between the highest and lowest frequencies of a transmission channel. It is measured in Hertz (Hz). Higher number higher data rate. |
| B-ISDN | Broadband ISDN designed to handle high bandwidth applications. This technology currently uses ATM over SONET. |
| Backbone | The Physical/electrical connections between wiring closets. |
| Bootp | Bootstrap Protocol. Protocol used by a network node to find its ip address. |
| Bridge | A layer 2 device that connects two network segments and passes packets between them. |
| Broadband | A transmission system that multiplexes multiple signals into one cable. |
| Broadcast | Data packets that will be sent to all nodes on a network. |
| Byte | A series of 8 bits. |
| C | |
| Category 3 | a UTP cable used in 10baseT networks. Data transmission is up to 10Mbps. |
| Category 5 | a UTP cable used in 100baseT networks. Data transmission is up to 100Mbps. Contains more twist per inch than category 3. |
| Coax Cable | A cable composed of an insulated central conducting wire wrapped in another cylindrical conductor (the shield). |
| Collision | When two ethernet nodes transmitt at the same time. |
| CSU | Channel Service Unit |
| D | |
| DS | Digital Service |
| DSU | Data Service Unit |
| DTMF | Dual Tone Multi-frequency |
| E | |
| EMI | Electro Magnetic Interference, the interference in signal transmission or reception caused by the radiation of electrical and magnetic fields. |
| Ethernet | The most widely installed LAN technology that is now specified as a standard with speeds starting at 10Mbps. |
