As information
and data have become more important DSL (Digital Subscriber Line),
is helping to make home, small and medium businesses more connected.
This technology is a high bandwidth signaling technology. It uses
regular copper phone lines to transmit the data to the user. Because
of the analog nature of DSL its speed varies. It will transmit
data at rates of 1.544Mbps to 256Kbps downloads. Uploads are usually
on the order of 128kbps. These speeds are aubject to your home/offices
distance to the local Reginal Bell Operating Company (RBOC's)
central office (CO).
Dsl comes
in a variety of different technologies. Some of these are ADSL,
HDSL, IDSL and RADSL. Each technology is described below:
ADSL
stands for Asymmetric DSL. This technology provides the end user
with greater downstream than upstream rates. ADSL provides for
bidirectional data transmission however the downstream traffic
travels faster than the upstream traffic. Presently ADSL data
rates can vary from 192K to 9M. Check out our DSL
matrix on how to choose which DSL service is best for
you.
HDSL
stands for High-bit-rate DSL. This technology provides the end
user with data transmission that is bidirectional and has rates
up to 1.5Mbps. This technology uses two pair of phone lines: one
for sending data and the other for receiving data. Check out our
DSL matrix on how to choose
which DSL service is best for you.
IDSL
stands for ISDN DSL. This technology uses ISDN phone lines and
is capable of providing data rates up to 144Kbps bidirectional.
This technology can be used on any ISDN phone line. Check out
our DSL matrix on how to choose
which DSL service is best for you.
RADSL
stands for Rate Adapative DSL. This technology allows modems to
automatically and dynamically to adjust their transmission speeds.
This allows for greater distance extension of ADSL service. Check
out our DSL matrix on how
to choose which DSL service is best for you.
Presently
DSL is being deployed across the country and overseas. DSL is
best suited for home users who would like to experience the internet
at faster rates than analog modems 56K. For businesses that would
like to take advantage of a cheaper solution to T1 facilities
and charges. Also for telecommuters who need a better method of
performing their job than using existing telephones and ISDN services.
